Sony is known for their cutting-edge technology in all things electronic. The Sony ICF-CS10iP is no different. This MP3 docking station is the ultimate multi-tasker, connecting a range of devices, such as an iPod a smartphone or an MP3 player, and also functioning as an alarm clock. The built-in alarm clock radio makes waking in the morning seem less harsh, and the included remote makes it easy to adjust settings from a distance.
Sony seems to have forgotten, however, a few key elements in making this docking station really portable. For one, this MP3 speaker dock doesn’t have a rechargeable battery. In order to play music or function at all, it needs to be plugged into an AC power outlet. The dock does have an internal battery, but its main purpose is to backup the player in case of a power outage. The docking station also doesn’t charge a docked iPod or pause the music for incoming calls on a smartphone.
Although the ICF-CS10iP has a built-in iPod-docking adapter on the front of the device, you can also connect other devices to this docking station. Simply hook up your MP3 player to the 3.5 mm AUDIO IN jack with the included cord, and press the AUDIO IN button to let the dock know you have connected an external device. The docking station’s display screen will show the device is connected, and you will be able to adjust sound levels of the player with the included remote or with the onboard controls.
The best part about the Sony ICF-CS10iP is that it is much more than just an MP3 docking station. It allows you to start your day off right with a smooth transition from slumber to alertness with its built-in alarm clock. Dual alarm clock settings mean you can tailor the alarm to two different sleep schedules. The alarm can wake you with a beep, music from your iPod or the morning news on the radio. An adjustable display brightness also allows you to modify the device to your preferences.
Sony’s ICF-CS10iP is fairly small in size, weighing about 4 pounds. As mentioned previously, it hasn’t been designed to be ultra portable, needing to be plugged in at all times, so a smaller design isn’t necessary. This docking station is meant to be at your bedside, not beachside.
Sony has a satisfactory help and support network for consumers on their website. They offer a ton of information on the product’s information page, and you'll also find links to online user manuals. They also have an online customer support email address for any specific questions. We were a little disappointed in the 90-day warranty, preferring to see something more along the lines of a year to replace defective parts.
Sony’s ICF-CS10iP is a great all-in-one MP3 docking station and clock radio. We love all of the little elements that make this speaker dock compatible with many different kinds of external devices. We only wish the docking station was a little more portable so we could potentially take it on the road. We would have also liked to see a more extensive warranty. Sony is a good brand, but a 90-day warranty seems substandard.
